Artist Statement
Combining floral photography, woven tapestry, thread, paint, and traditional handwork techniques, I make large-scale textile garden installations where flowers symbolize both the natural world and our humanity.
Using human-sized flowers as a point of connection, my work explores themes of mending, healing, and repair of people and planet.
These garden tapestries represent the blurred interconnectedness of our natural, social, political, and emotional environments – all fragile, weakened, in need of care & solutions for repair.
In my work, the labor-intensive process of stitching, painting, over-dyeing, appliqué, and patchwork on the tapestries is intended as a gesture of mending and symbolic of the empathetic action, difficult labor, and human choice needed to ensure the thriving, flourishing & care for all living beings within our collective, shared home.
Process
Since 2019, I’ve worked with woven tapestry as the predominant medium for my textile garden installations.
Beginning with photography and writing, my captured images and words are translated into tapestry, as the first steps in the process. In later stages, materials like thread, paint, wool, fabric, and dye are added as part of the handwork techniques that reflect my overarching concepts of mending, healing, and repair.
Current 2024-2026
Current work, including the 2024 solo exhibition Glimmer, focuses on healing and integrates color therapy (chromotherapy), concepts from eco-healing, and clinical psychology to create garden environments that shift and evoke specific moods and atmospheres, supporting emotional health and promoting well-being.

Bio:
Heidi Carlsen-Rogers makes large-scale textile garden installations.
Using human-sized flowers as a point of connection and floral photography as a foundation, she merges visual impressions with concepts that explore environmental and social well-being, inclusiveness, connectedness, healing, and repair.
Heidi combines photographic tapestry with thread, paint, and traditional handcraft techniques, marrying organic subjects with artificial processes and digital manipulation with the handmade—exploring the ongoing tension between beauty, destruction, human nature, our planet, and the Divine.
In 2024, Heidi received the People’s Choice Award at the Delta Triennial, Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts; in 2021, she was awarded an Artists 360 grant from the Walton Family Foundation & Mid-America Arts Alliance; and in 2016, was granted an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Arkansas Arts Council.
In 2024-2025, her solo exhibition Glimmer was presented at the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas in Pine Bluff.
Her work has been included in the 2024 Delta Triennial at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock, Arkansas; exhibitions with the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts; Women to Watch: Arkansas State Tour 2023; Wiregrass Museum of Art; Masur Museum of Art; Chautauqua Institution; and other regional exhibitions. Her work will be included in the upcoming exhibition Cross-Pollinations at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, Missouri, September 2026–February 2027.
Heidi’s work has been selected for the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts Juried Artist Registry, 2019–2027. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections and select public installations throughout the U.S. and abroad.
She holds a B.S. degree from Kent State University and worked professionally in the visual display industry prior to becoming a full-time artist.
Born in Alabama, Heidi has lived in Connecticut, Ohio, and Chicago and has been influenced by the diverse experiences, perspectives, and personal history gathered while living in different regions of the country.
She currently lives and maintains a studio in Northwest Arkansas, surrounded by the verdant Ozark landscape where her tapestry flowers are found.
