(Gather) Sacra Conversazione

Photographic woven tapestry, cotton-, polyester-, viscose thread, hand dyed cotton cord

Thread cascades from my floral tapestries as if nature is unraveling.
Combining floral photography, woven tapestry, thread & traditional handcraft techniques, I make textile “gardens” where human-scaled flowers, symbolizing both the natural world & our humanity, are fraying & coming undone.
The garden tapestries represent the blurred, interconnectedness of our natural & social environments – all fragile, weakened, in need of care & solutions for repair.
Within this tapestry titled Gather (Sacred Conversation), flowers interact with one another as if having a conversation loosely mimicking the Sacra Conversazione painting format of the Renaissance period.
Using imagery with pollinator-specific florals is intentional, symbolic of these flowers being “good neighbors” to bees, butterflies & other fauna.
Clusters of hand-dyed thread fall from the bottom hem of the tapestry indicating the garden patch is uprooted.
The roots, representing a vulnerable, life-critical part of a plant is exposed & perilously dangling without proper place, soil, or sustenance to survive – literally, hanging by a thread.
In their human-sized scale, an encounter with the flowers becomes personal as we now see them “face- to-face” & their gaze returns ours. Amplifying scale shifts the power differential giving voice & visibility to the often overlooked & unseen inhabitants of our natural world.
Understanding that pollinators support 2/3 of human food supply & are fundamental for functioning healthy environments, addressing solutions for restoration of native habitats, finding non-toxic pesticide solutions & creating protections for delicate ecosystems is critical.
Addressing how current human systems intersect & impact the natural world while highlighting the symbiotic relationship & fragile interdependence we have on each other is essential.
These floral tapestries represent the “good neighbors” among us & highlight a vulnerable “community” in need of human cooperation, partnership, protection & care.
This tapestry garden is a call to “gather” as the name implies, a coming together of people & planet for solutions where all can not only survive, but flourish & thrive – truly, a sacred conversation.
